Phoenix Labs Undergoes Significant Staff Reduction
Vancouver-based game developer Phoenix Labs has confirmed a substantial reduction in its workforce, affecting a large number of employees. The company announced the decision on LinkedIn, stating it was part of a broader operational restructuring that, although unfortunate, was deemed essential. Phoenix Labs expressed its gratitude to the departing staff members, acknowledging the significant impact their skills, commitment, and innovative spirit have had on the company and its gaming portfolio. The future of the studio's notable titles, Dauntless and Fae Farm, remains uncertain, with the company promising to provide further updates in the near future. For the time being, the developer's primary focus is on providing support to those affected by the transition. This move follows a series of layoffs, including the reported dismissal of 140 employees last May. Former principal engineer Kris Morness noted that Phoenix Labs was acquired by blockchain platform Forte over a year ago, which led to the cancellation of all projects under development. Additionally, the company underwent layoffs in December 2023, affecting 34 staff members across various divisions, and a 9% workforce reduction in May 2023.
