GDC Survey Reveals 41% of Developers Impacted by Layoffs in 2024
A recent survey conducted by the Game Developers Conference has shed light on the state of the games industry, revealing that 41% of developers were affected by layoffs in 2024, up from 35% in the previous year. The survey, which polled over 3,000 developers, found that one in ten respondents had been laid off, with 29% seeing their colleagues impacted by redundancies. The primary reasons cited for layoffs included restructuring, declining revenue, and shifts in marketing strategies. Developers attributed the ongoing trend of layoffs to factors such as overexpansion during the Covid era, rising production costs, and poor leadership. Despite this, support for unionization among developers remained relatively stable, with one-fifth of respondents discussing unionization over the past year. The survey also highlighted a decline in developers working for AAA studios, from 18% to 15%, and an increase in those working on PC, with 80% of developers creating games for the platform. The rise of the Steam Deck was noted as a potential factor in this increase. In terms of working hours, the majority of developers reported working 40 hours or less per week, although 13% reported working over 51 hours per week, citing self-pressure as the primary reason. The survey also explored developers' interests in various platforms, with PlayStation 5 leading the way among consoles and mobile development experiencing its first increase since 2020. Additionally, the survey touched on the topic of live-service games, with 42% of developers expressing disinterest in developing such games due to concerns about market oversaturation, declining player interest, and the risk of developer burnout.
