Mobile Games Dominate Africa's Gaming Industry, Accounting for 90% of Revenue
A recent study on the African gaming industry has shown that mobile games account for 90% of the sector's revenue. The 2024 Africa Game Developer Survey, which saw a 42% increase in participants from the previous year, gathered insights from 66 studios and 55 indie developers. Notably, 92% of the survey participants were under the age of 34. However, the survey also highlighted a significant gender disparity, with only 12% of respondents identifying as female, underscoring the need for increased diversity and inclusivity within the industry. In terms of revenue, South Africa is currently leading the pack, having generated over $110 million between 2020 and 2023, with projections suggesting the market will reach $333 million by 2026, driven largely by the growth of mobile gaming and esports. Nigeria's gaming market, fueled by a young and tech-savvy population, as well as a burgeoning esports scene, generated $249 million in 2021. Meanwhile, Kenya's market saw significant growth in mobile gaming, with a particular focus on educational, AR, and VR games, generating $46 million in 2021. According to Hugo Obi, founder and CEO of Maliyo Games, the organization behind the survey, 'The African gaming industry is experiencing rapid growth, driven by a vibrant community and a strong spirit of innovation.' This year has seen several notable milestones, including record-breaking participation in industry events and groundbreaking collaborations, such as the Disney Iwájú Rising Chef game. Despite facing challenges like limited funding and restricted access to international markets, the industry's momentum is undeniable, with new talent emerging alongside established industry veterans, creating a dynamic ecosystem supported by talent programs, community meetups, and regional conferences.
