Counterplay, Developer of Godfall, Allegedly Closes Down

Reports have emerged that Counterplay, the development studio behind Godfall, has allegedly shut down. This news has not been formally confirmed by the studio itself. However, according to PlayStation Lifestyle, a post on LinkedIn was spotted and verified, stating that the studio had disbanded following the end of a partnership with Jackalyptic. The post, which has since been edited to remove the mention of the studio's closure, highlighted the significant impact of Counterplay Games' developers on a project at Jackalyptic. Unfortunately, the partnership could not be continued into the new year, resulting in the disbanding of Counterplay Games. The exact number of people affected by this closure remains unclear. Counterplay, which received backing from Gearbox, is known for its work on Godfall, a game that was developed in collaboration with Disruptive Games and released as a PS5 launch title, receiving mixed reviews from critics and players. The recent wave of job cuts in the gaming industry appears to be ongoing, with other studios such as Freejam, developer of Robocraft 2, and Enad Global 7's Toadman Interactive also experiencing significant layoffs, and over 150 developers losing their jobs in the first two weeks of 2025, including those at Splash Damage and Jar of Sparks.
