Australia's Gaming Industry Sees Steady Employment with $211.9m Revenue in 2024

In 2024, the Australian video game sector achieved a revenue of $339.1m AUD, equivalent to $211.9m USD. Despite global challenges in game development, the industry maintained steady full-time employment with 2,465 developers, and 61% of studios plan to recruit new talent in the coming year. Moreover, 81% of respondents expect their studio's workforce to remain stable or grow in 2025. The Interactive Games & Entertainment Association's Australian Game Development Industry Snapshot report, based on input from 137 studios, found that 85% of these studios develop games based on their own intellectual property, with 93% of their revenue coming from international sources. The report also highlighted Victoria as a key hub for game development, with 52% of game studio headquarters located in the state. Furthermore, while many studios have a presence in multiple states, 82% of the workforce is concentrated on the east coast, with 36% in Victoria, 27% in Queensland, 18% in New South Wales, and 1% in the Australian Capital Territory. According to Ron Curry, CEO of IGEA, 'The local gaming sector has demonstrated its ability to build capabilities despite global challenges, with 93% of its revenue generated from overseas, showcasing the global appeal of Australian-made games.' Curry also emphasized the importance of maintaining generous tax rebates and direct government funding to support the growth of the local industry and its contribution to Australia's creative and digital exports. Notably, 25% of surveyed studios utilized the Digital Games Tax Offset last year, and nearly 40% plan to do so in the current financial year.
