Sony to Acquire Majority Stake in Kadokawa Corporation, Parent Company of FromSoftware

In a significant move, Sony is set to become the largest shareholder of Kadokawa Corporation, the parent company of renowned game developer FromSoftware. This development comes as a result of a strategic capital and business alliance agreement, under which Sony will purchase over 12 million new shares in Kadokawa on January 7, 2025, for approximately ¥50 billion ($318 million). When combined with the shares Sony previously acquired in February 2021, this investment will give the company a stake of around 10% in Kadokawa. Notably, Sony already holds a 14% stake in FromSoftware, the acclaimed developer behind Elden Ring. The agreement between Sony and Kadokawa extends beyond share acquisition, with plans for collaborative projects, including the adaptation of Kadokawa's intellectual properties into live-action films and TV series, co-production of anime, and expansion of publishing and distribution for both anime and video games. This news follows Sony's recent expression of interest in acquiring Kadokawa Corporation. Kadokawa's portfolio includes notable game developers such as Spike Chunsoft and Acquire, in addition to its ventures in print publishing, film and TV production, web services, and real estate, making the implications of this acquisition far-reaching.
