Acclaimed Developer Hideki Kamiya Launches New Studio Clovers Under Capcom, Teases Okami Sequel
Veteran game designer Hideki Kamiya has made a notable return to Capcom, this time as the head of a newly formed studio called Clovers. As the studio's head and chief game designer, Kamiya is spearheading the development of a highly anticipated sequel to the 2006 cult classic Okami, a game for which he originally served as director. The announcement of Clovers and the Okami sequel was made during The Game Awards, revealing that key members of the original Okami development team are also on board. To bring this project to life, Clovers is partnering with M-Two, known for its work on Okami HD and the remakes of Resident Evil 3 and 4, and Machine Head Works, a newly established studio. The approach of forming Clovers with a core team of elite developers, supplemented by co-development partners, allows for a focused yet collaborative game development process. The name 'Clovers' pays homage to Capcom's former Clover Studio, the original developer of Okami, as well as titles like God Hand and Viewtiful Joe. After Clover Studio was dissolved in 2006, Kamiya went on to co-found PlatinumGames, where he spent 17 years before his departure in September 2023. Reflecting on his journey, Kamiya expressed his gratitude for the support that enabled him to find a new creative home. 'I left a large group to become independent, searching for a place where I could develop games in line with my creative vision. Thanks to supportive friends who share my beliefs, I found a place where I can proudly create games to share with everyone. Although we may be small, our passion and conviction are immense, and we aim to continue making games that bring joy to players, staying true to the principles that drove me when I first entered the gaming industry.'
