Former Bungie Developer Chris Barrett Files Lawsuit Against Bungie and Sony Over Reputation Damage

Chris Barrett, the former director of the Marathon reboot, has initiated a lawsuit against Bungie and Sony, alleging that they intentionally damaged his reputation by falsely implying he was investigated for and found to have engaged in sexual misconduct. This, according to the lawsuit, was done to circumvent a $45 million payment to Barrett. Barrett was fired by Bungie following an internal investigation into allegations of inappropriate behavior towards female colleagues. However, Barrett's legal team argues that Bungie's primary motivation was to shift attention away from their significant business failures, and they were willing to sacrifice Barrett to achieve this goal. The lawsuit highlights that Barrett was never questioned about engaging in inappropriate sexual conduct, sending inappropriate materials, or retaliating against coworkers, as he had not engaged in such behavior. Barrett was informed of his termination via Microsoft Teams, citing gross misconduct, three weeks after the investigation began. The lawsuit further alleges that Bungie provided misleading statements to Bloomberg to deflect blame for Sony's underperforming $3.6 billion acquisition of Bungie and delays in video game production, as well as to shift blame for their own #MeToo issues by falsely implying that Barrett was the subject of severe misconduct accusations. As a result, Barrett claims to have endured harassment, public ridicule, loss of friends and professional opportunities, and strained family relationships, ultimately crushing his dream of launching his own video game company.
