Ubisoft Announces Closure of XDefiant in 2025, Affecting Nearly 300 Employees
Ubisoft has revealed plans to discontinue XDefiant by 2025, resulting in the shutdown of two studios and significant job losses, with approximately 300 staff members impacted by the layoffs. In a recent blog post, Ubisoft's chief studios and portfolio officer, Marie-Sophie de Waubert, stated that XDefiant failed to attract and retain a sufficient player base, making it unsustainable as a live-service title. According to de Waubert, "the game is not performing well enough to justify further substantial investment. Consequently, one of Ubisoft's offices in San Francisco will close, although its business operations will continue. The Osaka office will also cease operations, while the Sydney office will reduce production. A total of 277 employees will be made redundant as a result. It is reported that half of the XDefiant team will transition into other roles within Ubisoft. A small team will remain to manage the game until its servers are shut down on June 3, 2025. Although season three is still scheduled for release, new downloads, registrations, and purchases are no longer available as of December 4. Waubert emphasized that Ubisoft will continue to adapt its production and business strategies and implement targeted restructuring when necessary. This announcement contradicts a statement made by Ubisoft's Mark Rubin last month, in which he denied rumors of XDefiant's impending shutdown after its fourth season. As part of its ongoing cost reduction plan, Ubisoft has been limiting recruitment, restructuring, and reducing external expenditures, as outlined in its latest financial report.
