Shuhei Yoshida, a PlayStation Veteran, to Bid Farewell in January

Shuhei Yoshida, a renowned figure in the PlayStation ecosystem, will be retiring from Sony Interactive Entertainment on January 15th. Yoshida has had a storied career, holding various leadership positions since joining the team in 1993. Initially, he worked closely with Japanese publishers and developers to create content for the inaugural PlayStation console. He is perhaps most notable for his tenure as president of Worldwide Studios, where he spearheaded first-party development for over a decade, from 2008 to 2019. Since 2019, Yoshida has been at the helm of PlayStation Indies, fostering the company's relationship with independent studios. In a recent conversation on the official PlayStation Podcast, Yoshida reminisced about his early days as part of Ken Kutaragi's original PlayStation team. 'I joined Ken Kutaragi's team in February 1993, when they were still developing the original PlayStation,' Yoshida recalled. 'At the time, the team consisted solely of engineers, and I was the first non-technical person to join, as Sony Corporation began planning to bring PlayStation to market.' Yoshida expressed his excitement about the innovation that Ken's team was bringing, including 3D graphics, real-time technology, and CD-ROM, which offered a low-cost manufacturing solution with ample data storage. Despite their high hopes and ambitions, the team faced skepticism from the video game industry, given their lack of presence and the failed attempts of other electronics companies to enter the market. Yoshida's current role, working with independent studios, is what he considers his 'dream job.' One of his fondest memories is of the small game Journey being named Game of the Year at the DICE summit in 2013. 'The entire audience stood up, and the room was filled with an amazing feeling, as this small game had such a profound impact on people's lives,' Yoshida said. In 2023, GamesIndustry.biz had the opportunity to speak with Shuhei Yoshida ahead of his BAFTA Fellowship Award.
