Itch.io Introduces Mandatory Disclosure for Creators Using Generative AI

Itch.io has introduced a new policy requiring creators to disclose the use of generative AI in their projects. According to a recent announcement, a new 'generative AI disclosure' field has been added, enabling developers to provide details about the specific elements of their projects that utilize generative AI, including graphics, sound effects, text, dialogue, and code. Games that incorporate generative AI will be labeled with an 'AI Generated' tag, along with additional tags that specify which aspects of the game use AI, such as 'AI Generated Graphics' or 'AI Generated Audio.' In contrast, games that do not use AI will be marked as 'No AI.' This new category is designed to 'ensure buyers are aware of the origins of the material they are obtaining,' as stated by Itch.io. Developers will be given a grace period to update their pages, after which the platform will rely on user reports to identify non-compliant creators. To simplify the tagging process, a bulk tagging tool has been introduced. Itch.io has also warned that assets containing generative AI that are not properly tagged will no longer be eligible for indexing on the platform's browse pages.
