Sweden's Gaming Industry Sees 6.4% Revenue Growth in 2023
According to a recent report by Dataspelsbranschen, the Swedish gaming industry's domestic revenue grew by 6.4% year-over-year in 2023, reaching SEK 34.6 billion ($3.17 billion). The industry has seen significant growth over the past five years, with revenue doubling during this period. The number of gaming companies in Sweden increased by 8% in 2023, with 108 new companies emerging, bringing the total to 1,010. The workforce also expanded by 8%, with 9,089 people employed in the industry, comprising 75.8% men and 23.7% women. Notably, the number of women in the industry rose by 23.7% year-over-year. Despite layoffs and studio closures, the industry saw a nearly 30% increase in new hires compared to 2022. The report highlights that most Swedish gaming companies are small, with 42% being solo endeavors and 39% having fewer than five employees. Only 1% of companies have over 250 employees. Nine firms, including King, Mojang, Paradox Interactive, and EA Dice, reported revenues exceeding SEK 1 billion ($92 million) for the period. Managing director Per Strömbäck commented, '2023 should have been a challenging year for Swedish game companies, but it turned out to be a record year, with increases in employment, revenue, and the number of women in the industry.' However, he noted that investments decreased due to factors such as low interest rates, inflation, redundancies, and studio closures. Strömbäck attributed the industry's resilience to its ability to produce a wide range of high-quality games that cater to diverse players, from simple puzzles to complex strategy games.
