Pocketpair Reveals Details of Nintendo and The Pokémon Company's Patent Infringement Claims

Pocketpair, the studio behind Palworld, has disclosed further information regarding the lawsuit filed by Nintendo and The Pokémon Company, which alleges that Palworld infringes upon multiple patents held by the two companies. The lawsuit, filed on September 19, claims that Palworld's monster-based survival game bears similarities to the Pokémon franchise, infringing on three specific patents. According to Pocketpair, the patents in question relate to systems for capturing characters in a virtual space, an aiming system for deploying capture items, and a system for rideable characters. Nintendo and The Pokémon Company are seeking an injunction against Palworld, as well as a minimum of $65,000 in damages. Pocketpair has stated its intention to defend its game, asserting its position through future legal proceedings. The patents at the center of the dispute were reportedly applied for and registered after Palworld's launch on January 19, 2024. The outcome of this case may have significant implications for the video game industry, potentially calling into question the current approach to patents for in-game features.
