Sony's Financial Performance Boosted by Strong PlayStation Sales, with PS5 Shipments Exceeding 65 Million
Sony has announced its latest financial results, revealing significant growth in its PlayStation business. The company's Game & Network Services division saw increased revenue, primarily driven by the sales of third-party games and network services such as PlayStation Plus, as well as favorable foreign exchange rates. As a result, Sony has revised its full-year forecast for the gaming division, initially announced in August. The forecast for net sales has been increased to ¥4.5 trillion ($30 billion), representing a 4% rise from the initial forecast and a 5% increase from the previous year's results. Operating income is now expected to reach ¥355 billion ($2.3 billion), an 11% increase from the August forecast and a 22% year-on-year rise. Although PlayStation hardware profitability has improved, console sales continue to decline, with 6.2 million PS5 consoles shipped in the six-month period, down from 8.2 million in the same period last year. The total lifetime shipments of the PS5 have now surpassed 65 million. In the first half of the year, 131.3 million full games were shipped, with 11.3 million being first-party games. Notable sales highlights include Astro Bot, which sold 1.5 million copies worldwide in its first month, and Ghost of Tsushima, which has now shipped 13 million copies across PC and PS5. The number of monthly active users on PlayStation Plus remained at 116 million in the second quarter, unchanged from the previous quarter but up from 107 million in the same period last year.
