Warner Bros Discovery Reports Significant Underperformance in Gaming Division

Warner Bros Discovery has announced a substantial impairment of over $100 million due to the poor performance of its game MultiVersus. During a recent financial call, CEO David Zaslav informed investors that despite having four successful and profitable game franchises, including Hogwarts Legacy, Mortal Kombat, Game of Thrones, and DC, particularly Batman, the gaming business is not meeting its potential. As a result, the company will focus its development efforts on these four core franchises with proven studios to enhance its success rate. The recent financial results were affected by the gaming sector, with the company taking an additional impairment of over $100 million, primarily due to the underperformance of MultiVersus, bringing the total writedown for the year to over $300 million in the gaming business. This is the main factor contributing to the decline in Studios' profit this year. Zaslav stated that in the fourth quarter, the gaming sector is expected to remain flat or slightly improve compared to the previous year, as the launch of Hogwarts Legacy on the Switch platform in November will be offset by lower costs. He emphasized that the studio business must deliver more consistent results, particularly in the gaming sector, which is currently underperforming.
