Netflix Appoints Mike Verdu as VP of GenAI for Games

Mike Verdu has unveiled his new position at Netflix as Vice President of GenAI for Games. Although specific details about the role are scarce, Verdu mentioned in a LinkedIn post that he is focused on leveraging a 'once-in-a-generation' opportunity to transform game development and player experiences, with generative AI at its core. The news of Verdu's new role emerged in June, shortly after it was confirmed that Alain Tascan, a former Epic Games executive, would be taking over as President of Netflix Games. Verdu emphasized that Tascan's appointment and his own new role were part of a planned transition, urging his peers to disregard speculation in the media. He believes that generative AI will enable larger development teams to work more efficiently and enhance the capabilities of smaller teams. Verdu views this technology as a means to unlock new experiences for players and elevate the industry to new heights. Netflix has been heavily investing in video games since hiring Verdu in 2021, acquiring multiple studios and establishing internal ones. Although the company recently announced the closure of its California studio, its mobile games have surpassed 210 million lifetime downloads.
