Microsoft Sees 43% Yearly Increase in Gaming Revenue Following Activision Acquisition

Microsoft has unveiled its Q1 fiscal year 2025 financial results, showcasing substantial growth in its gaming sector, primarily attributed to the acquisition of Activision. Although Xbox hardware revenue has declined, the overall performance of the company has been promising, with a 16% year-over-year increase in revenue and an 11% rise in net income. The More Personal Computing segment, which encompasses Xbox, saw a 17% year-over-year revenue increase to $13.2 billion. Gaming revenue as a whole experienced a 43% year-over-year surge. The Xbox content and services branch specifically noted a 61% year-over-year increase, which the company attributes to the 'net impact from the Activision acquisition.' However, Xbox hardware revenue was down by 29% compared to the same period last year. Despite this, CFO Amy Hood stated that the gaming segment's results exceeded expectations due to strong performance in both first and third-party content as well as consoles. CEO Satya Nadella highlighted that Game Pass achieved a new Q1 record for total revenue and average revenue per subscriber, with the successful launch of Call of Duty Black Ops 6 expected to further drive these numbers. He also emphasized the company's focus on building a business positioned for long-term growth, driven by higher-margin content and services. Looking ahead, Microsoft anticipates a decline in gaming revenue for Q2, primarily due to hardware, and expects Xbox content and services revenue to remain relatively stable.
