Roblox Enhances Child Safety Measures for Users Under 13

Roblox has unveiled plans to bolster its parental controls, scheduled for implementation next month, as part of its ongoing efforts to create a safer environment for its younger users. According to an email sent to parents, as reported by Bloomberg, the updates will encompass revised content maturity levels and default settings. Notably, children under 13 will require parental consent to access specific chat features, while those under 9 will need permission to engage with experiences containing moderate violence or crude humor. Furthermore, a new account type will be introduced, enabling parents to monitor and control their child's activities on the platform, including the ability to view and adjust parental controls remotely and receive insights into their child's usage. This move is part of Roblox's broader commitment to enhancing user safety, particularly for its youngest users. "These updates reflect our dedication to making Roblox one of the safest online spaces for all users, especially the youngest ones," stated Juliet Chaitin-Lefcourt, Roblox's head of product communications, in an interview with The Verge. The company has faced scrutiny over its handling of child safety, including a recent report by Hindenburg Research that criticized the platform for exposing children to inappropriate content. Roblox has disputed these allegations, emphasizing its serious approach to removing inappropriate content and its significant investments in trust and safety measures.
