PlayStation Acquires Bungie's Creative Team
The creative team from Bungie has joined PlayStation Studios to lend their expertise in developing live service games. Bridget O'Neill, formerly senior creative director at Bungie, shared the news on LinkedIn, stating that the team will lay the groundwork for a creative division within PlayStation. O'Neill has also taken on the role of senior director of creative at PlayStation Studios. She expressed her enthusiasm for the opportunity to share Bungie's experience with other studios working on live service games, highlighting the challenges that come with this type of development. The collaboration between PlayStation and Bungie is expected to significantly accelerate the development of new games entering the competitive market. This move follows Bungie's layoffs of 220 developers in July, which accounted for 17% of its workforce. Additionally, 155 roles were absorbed into Sony Interactive Entertainment, with 75 individuals forming a new studio within PlayStation to work on one of Bungie's incubation projects, following Sony's $3.6 billion acquisition of Bungie in 2022.
