Sega Takes Bank of Innovation to Court Over Alleged Patent Infringements

A lawsuit has been filed by Sega Corporation against Bank of Innovation, a Japanese game development studio, over allegations of patent infringement. The publisher behind the iconic Sonic franchise asserts that Bank of Innovation's titles, including the popular idle RPG Memento Mori, have breached multiple patents it holds. According to reports from the Otaku Research Institute, Sega is seeking damages of ¥1 billion and an injunction against Memento Mori and related content. Bank of Innovation has stated that it does not believe its games infringe on Sega's patents and plans to defend itself against the lawsuit. The two companies had been engaged in discussions to resolve the issue but were unable to reach an agreement, prompting Sega to pursue legal action. Analyst Dr. Serkan Toto notes that one of the patents in question involves a system for merging identical character cards in collection games. He warns that if Sega is awarded the ¥1 billion in damages, it would have a significant financial impact on Bank of Innovation. This lawsuit follows a similar case last month in which Nintendo and The Pokémon Company sued Palworld developer Pocketpair over alleged patent infringements, with some patents potentially designed specifically to target Palworld.
