Unity 6 Now Available Across All Major Platforms

The latest version of Unity, Unity 6, has been launched simultaneously across various platforms including mobile devices, personal computers, consoles, and extended reality environments. According to a recent blog post, this new engine version incorporates several key features such as comprehensive multiplayer workflows, tools designed to facilitate mobile web development, and advanced graphics capabilities that enable the transfer of workloads from the central processing unit to the graphics processing unit. Matthew Bromberg, Unity's president and CEO, emphasized the company's significant shift in approach to the development cycle, which involves expanding testing to create an ongoing feedback loop. "The focus on providing practical value with Unity 6 will extend far beyond its launch," Bromberg stated. "We plan to allocate substantial product and engineering resources to Unity 6 for an extended period, exceeding that of previous long-term support releases, with a commitment to support it for at least two years after the next major release." Unity is also adopting a new update strategy, which involves maintaining three types of releases: major releases like Unity 6, patch releases for bug fixes and improvements, and 'Updates' that offer optional new functionality to enhance performance and provide access to new features. The first update for Unity 6, Unity 6.1, is set to be released in April 2025. "With Unity 6's release, we aim to reestablish connections with our customers and demonstrate our commitment to delivering what matters most to them, marking a significant change in our approach," Bromberg said in an interview with CNBC. "Our future strategy will focus more on the core applications of our engine within the industry," he added.
