FTC Introduces Simplified Subscription Cancellation Rule

The Federal Trade Commission has introduced a new rule requiring companies to provide straightforward cancellation processes for subscription services, making it as effortless to cancel as it is to sign up. The regulation, which comes into effect in six months, also mandates that businesses provide clear and easily accessible information about their services, ensuring customers are fully informed before committing to a subscription. Companies must demonstrate that customers have a thorough understanding of the terms before subscribing. Failure to comply with these rules may result in penalties. The new rule is part of the FTC's effort to update the 1973 Negative Option Rule, targeting unfair practices related to automatic renewals and recurring payments. According to FTC Chair Lina M. Khan, the rule aims to protect consumers from being unfairly charged for unwanted services, promoting a more transparent and consumer-friendly digital economy.
