Majority of Americans Engage with Video Games, Reveals Circana

A recent survey by Circana indicates that a significant 71% of US consumers are involved in playing video games, as highlighted in the 2024 Gamer Segmentation Report. The survey, which collected responses from 5,100 individuals between May and June 2024, estimates that there are approximately 236.4 million gamers in the US. Notably, the largest demographic of gamers consists of adults aged 45 and above, accounting for 37% of the total, driven largely by female gamers and a growing interest in console gaming. Although engagement among children under the age of 12 has decreased by 6% since 2022, this age group remains a vital demographic. In terms of expenditure, the average spend on video game purchases over the past six months was $56.20, while 46% of respondents reported no spending on gaming products. Furthermore, US gamers dedicate an average of 14.5 hours per week to playing video games, with the average player utilizing at least three different devices. Mobile gaming is the most popular, with 65% of gamers playing on mobile devices, followed by PC and console. According to Circana's Mat Piscatella, "The pandemic led to an influx of casual gamers who incorporated gaming into their routines due to the suspension of public activities. However, as life returned to normal, many of these players have since stopped gaming." Piscatella added, "Despite the decline in overall player numbers, the most striking aspect of the current gaming landscape is the persistence of dedicated gamers, who are investing more time and money into the experience. Adapting to the new market reality, characterized by a more mature and discerning audience, is crucial to avoiding further setbacks."
