US Game Spending Sees 7% Decline in August, Reaching $4.1 Billion
According to Circana's latest market report, US game spending in August experienced a 7% year-over-year decrease, totaling $4.1 billion. The most significant decline was observed in hardware sales, which plummeted 36% to $208 million compared to August 2023. The Nintendo Switch saw the steepest drop, with sales down 41%, while the PlayStation 5 maintained its position as the best-selling console for the month. Video game content, including full game sales, microtransactions, DLC, and subscriptions across various platforms, decreased by 5% to $3.7 billion. However, mobile content spending saw a 5% year-over-year increase, as reported by Sensor Tower. Madden NFL 25 emerged as the top-selling game in August, marking the 25th consecutive year that the Madden series has secured the top spot in its debut month. EA Sports College Football 25, last month's number one, slipped to second place but has become the best-selling game of the year to date, surpassing Helldivers 2. Notably, the EA Sports MVP Bundle, which includes deluxe editions of both College Football and Madden, stands as the fifth biggest seller of the year and the fourth biggest in August. The top 20 list for August saw three new entries, including Ubisoft's Star Wars: Outlaws at number three, Square Enix's Visions of Mana at number 10, and Bandai Namco's Gundam Breaker 4 at number 11. Year-to-date game spending in the US remains relatively stable, with a 1% increase to $36.3 billion for the first eight months of the year. Video game content spending has risen by 4% to $32.3 billion, while hardware sales have declined by 28% to $2.3 billion.
