Discord Faces Bans in Turkey and Russia

Turkey and Russia have imposed a ban on the popular gaming communication platform Discord. According to reports from Reuters, Turkey's decision to block Discord came after the platform allegedly refused to provide information requested by Turkish authorities, who claimed that instances of child sexual abuse and obscenity had occurred on the site. "Our security personnel are unable to access the content, and we can only take action when users report it to us," stated Transport and Infrastructure Minister Abdulkadir Uraloglu. "As Discord declined to share its information, including IP addresses and content, with our security units, we had no choice but to restrict access." Similarly, Russian authorities have also implemented a ban on the platform this week, following the issuance of fines to the San Francisco-based company for allegedly violating Russian laws. The Russian government claimed that Discord failed to remove approximately 1,000 items deemed unlawful in the country, leading to the decision to block access entirely. Other platforms, including Facebook and X/Twitter, are also banned in Russia. The ban has had an immediate effect on developers in the affected regions. "With Discord now banned in Turkey, communication between our studios in Finland and Turkey has come to a halt, unless we use a VPN in our Turkey office, which is against the law," said Meric Eryuyek of Gaming Istanbul. "I assume this senseless ban has impacted around 800 Turkish studios and their creative projects. For some studios, there is no alternative to Discord. This is a misguided and destructive move." A Discord spokesperson told Reuters, "We are aware of reports that Discord is inaccessible in Russia and Turkey. Our team is looking into these reports at this time."
