Copyright Infringement Lawsuit Filed Against Bungie Over Destiny 2's Narrative

Caspar Cole, whose real name is Matthew Kelsey Martineau, has initiated a lawsuit against Bungie, accusing the company of copyright infringement for allegedly basing Destiny 2's story on his original work. The lawsuit, submitted to the US District Court for the Eastern District of Louisiana on October 2, 2024, asserts that the Red Legion and other elements in Destiny 2 were lifted from Martineau's writings, which were published on WordPress between 2013 and 2014. According to the lawsuit, "the Red Legion serves as the foundation for the entire narrative of Destiny 2," and it is claimed that Bungie deliberately copied Martineau's work without permission, resulting in significant harm to the plaintiff. The lawsuit outlines the purported similarities between the two stories in detail, with Martineau alleging that Bungie's actions were intentional and caused him substantial injury. Martineau is seeking a halt to the distribution of materials similar to Destiny 2, as well as a detailed accounting of any sales of productions or services that infringe upon his rights. The plaintiff is demanding compensation for copyright infringement and willful infringement, and is requesting a jury trial.
