Halo Studios Emerges from 343 Rebranding, Focused on Multiple Unreal Engine 5 Projects
In a significant move, Microsoft has unveiled substantial changes for 343 Industries, the creative force behind the Halo series, including a name change to Halo Studios, adoption of Unreal Engine 5, and the commencement of development on several new titles within the esteemed franchise. As detailed in an Xbox Wire post, Halo Studios is not only rebranding but also undergoing cultural, workflow, and organizational transformations. A pivotal aspect of this restructuring is the decision to transition from the proprietary Slipspace Engine to Epic Games' Unreal Engine 5, a move initially reported in 2023. All forthcoming Halo projects will leverage Unreal Engine 5, with multiple games currently in development. This strategic shift has been hailed as "a new dawn for Halo." In an interview with Xbox Wire, studio leaders elaborated on the rationale behind the switch, citing the benefits of attracting talent already proficient in a widely adopted engine, thereby eliminating the need for extensive in-house training on proprietary technology. Previously, 343 Industries had to allocate a substantial portion of its resources to the ongoing development and maintenance of the Slipspace Engine. However, the studio is now collaborating with Epic Games to ensure Unreal Engine 5 meets the specific needs of the Halo franchise. "Our previous approach to making Halo games may not be as effective for our future gaming aspirations," noted Elizabeth van Wyck, COO of Halo Studios. "Part of our discussion involved enabling the team to focus on game development rather than tool and engine creation." The company emphasized that this marks the beginning of a new chapter, with no immediate plans to announce or release a new Halo game. Instead, Halo Infinite will continue to receive updates and expansions while the next titles are in development. 343 Industries has undergone significant changes since the launch of Halo Infinite in 2021, including widespread layoffs at Microsoft and a change in leadership with the departure of long-serving studio head Bonnie Ross in 2022.
