Dozens of Jobs Threatened as UK-Based VR Studio XR Games Undergoes Significant Restructuring
A major restructuring effort at XR Games has put numerous jobs in jeopardy, with reports indicating that up to 72 staff members may be at risk of losing their positions. The Leeds, UK-based studio has not yet issued an official statement, but affected employees have taken to LinkedIn to share the news. Colleagues have expressed their support for one another, with many citing the challenging current state of the gaming industry. Project lead QA tester Joe Hopson stated, "I am one among many who have been informed that my role is at risk of redundancy due to the massive restructuring at XR Games." QA project lead Tamara Whymark also confirmed that her role is being made redundant. Environment Artist Max Fitzgerald corroborated the figure of 72 redundancies, saying, "I was informed this morning that my role was included in the 72 which is at risk of redundancy." Head of IT Daniel Drakett added, "Due to the latest round of redundancies at XR Games, my position and my entire team are up for redundancy." The news has been met with an outpouring of support for the affected employees, with many acknowledging the talent and dedication of the XR Games team. According to its LinkedIn profile, the studio employs between 51 and 200 people. This development comes on the heels of reports that Sharkmob is facing layoffs at its London studio following the cancellation of one of its games in development.
