Microsoft to Cease Production of HoloLens 2, No Successor in Sight

Microsoft has announced that it will discontinue the production of HoloLens 2 by the end of 2027. Although the device will no longer be produced, it will continue to receive essential updates to fix critical security vulnerabilities and software issues until the designated cutoff point, after which all software support will be terminated. Initially launched in 2019, the HoloLens 2 was the second iteration of the company's augmented reality headset. Notably, Microsoft had previously canceled the development of HoloLens 3 in 2022, and subsequently removed Windows Mixed Reality from an operating system update the following year. Despite this, the company has reaffirmed its commitment to the militarized HoloLens IVAS, which is slated for testing by the US Army in early 2025. The decision to end HoloLens 2 production follows recent layoffs within the mixed reality division, reported by CNBC.
