Remedy Receives €15 Million Loan from Tencent

Remedy, a Finnish game development studio, has secured a €15 million loan from Tencent, a significant investment that will aid in the company's development endeavors as it transitions towards self-publishing its titles. This financial backing will be converted into a maximum of approximately 811,110 new shares, equivalent to 5.98% of all Remedy shares, as part of a convertible loan agreement. According to Remedy CEO Tero Virtala, the loan will facilitate the studio's growth and development as it assumes more control over the commercialization of its games. The agreement is contingent upon approval at the developer's Extraordinary General Meeting, scheduled for October 24, 2024. Virtala emphasized that this financing aligns with Remedy's long-term strategy to enhance its position in the value chain and increase its share of the revenue generated by its games. Tencent's investment underscores its confidence in Remedy's vision and strategy, particularly as the studio moves towards self-publishing. This development follows Tencent's previous investments in Remedy, including a 3.8% stake acquired in May 2021, which increased to 14% in April 2024. Additionally, Remedy has entered into a global publishing partnership with Tencent for its multiplayer title, codenamed Kestrel, although the project was cancelled in May. The studio has also secured funding from Annapurna Pictures to support the development of Control 2, with Annapurna acquiring the film and TV rights to Control and the Alan Wake series. As per Remedy's financial results for the first half of 2024, Alan Wake 2 has not yet fully recouped its development costs, despite releasing in October and recovering most of its development and marketing expenses.
