Unity 6 Set to Launch on October 17
The global launch of Unity 6 is scheduled for October 17, 2024, as announced by the engine provider at the Unite developer conference. This latest version will introduce a range of innovative features, including customizable graphics rendering, enhanced multiplayer development capabilities, and tools designed to optimize games for web browsers, featuring a new WebGPU backend. Additionally, Unity 6 will incorporate artificial intelligence tools, such as Sentis, allowing AI models to be integrated into games across any device. The engine will also expand on its Muse suite of AI tools and services. Furthermore, Unity has confirmed that Unity 6.1 is slated for release in April 2025, building upon the core capabilities of Unity 6 with added support for foldable and larger screens, deferred rendering in GPU Resident Drawer, and new build targets and profiles. Although Unity is committed to supporting the new interactions of its engine for an extended period, the company has begun working on the next generation of the engine, which promises to introduce a fundamental shift in approach to its design. This includes integrating features like ECS into the engine's core, a new content pipeline approach, a worldbuilding system based on DOTS, an animation system, and improved scripting. While the name of the next-generation engine has not been officially announced, Unity has clarified that it is still in the early stages of development. According to Unity CEO and President Matt Bromberg, "Developers have long been asking for more stability and performance, which we are addressing with Unity 6. We are delivering the best version of Unity yet, backed by deeper, long-term support and dedicated product and engineering resources post-launch." He added, "They will also receive frequent updates with new features, performance boosts, and bug fixes, all informed by their feedback with minimal disruption to their ongoing projects." Initially, Unity 5 was launched in March 2015, with the company announcing a yearly update cycle, which was later reverted to a major update model. Recently, Unity reversed its decision on the runtime fee following a thorough consultation with its community, customers, and partners, a move that was initially met with significant backlash when announced last September.
