Square Enix Reports Disappointing Sales for Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth and Final Fantasy 16

According to Square Enix president Takashi Kiryu, the company's latest financial reports revealed that sales of Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth and Final Fantasy 16 fell short of expectations. Kiryu stated that despite releasing multiple major titles, including Final Fantasy 16 and Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, profits did not meet the company's projections. This information was recently made public, although Kiryu initially shared these comments with investors in May. Additionally, Kiryu noted that Foamstars' sales were not as strong as anticipated, which likely contributed to the decision to transition the game to a free-to-play model. At the time of Kiryu's comments, Final Fantasy 16 had been available since June 2023, and Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth had been released in February 2024. Square Enix's financial earnings report for the quarter ending June 30, 2024, showed a significant decline in net sales compared to the previous quarter. The company attributed this decrease to a drop in Digital Entertainment revenue, which includes its video games business, citing poor sales of new titles such as SaGa: Emerald Beyond and the Steam launch of the Kingdom Hearts HD remastered collection.
