Pokémon Company Secures $15 Million Victory in Copyright Infringement Suit Against Chinese Game Developers

A Chinese court has ruled in favor of The Pokémon Company in a copyright and intellectual property theft case, awarding $15 million in damages against the developers of Pocket Monster Reissue, a game found to have willfully infringed on Pokémon's rights. The Shenzhen Intermediate People’s Court determined that the game, also known as Koudaiyaoguai Fuke, had intentionally lifted characters such as Ash Ketchum and Pikachu, leading to the significant damages ruling. One of the companies involved has been ordered to pay over $15 million, with some of the other firms facing joint liability and planning to appeal. Pocket Monster Reissue was estimated to have generated around $42 million annually. The Pokémon Company had initially sought $72 million in damages and a public apology for the copyright infringement. The company has reaffirmed its commitment to protecting its intellectual property to ensure fans worldwide can continue enjoying Pokémon content.
