Australia Implements New Classification Rules for Games with Gambling Elements
The Australian authorities have announced the introduction of new classification rules for video games that contain 'gambling-like' content. As of September 22, games that include simulated gambling will be restricted to adults and automatically receive an R 18+ rating. A separate rule requires games with in-game purchases that involve elements of chance, such as loot boxes, to have a minimum rating of M, indicating they are not suitable for players under 15. The R 18+ rating makes it illegal to sell or distribute these games to individuals under the age of 18. The new regulations apply to all games across various platforms, including PC, consoles, phones, and tablets. However, games that feature casino settings without allowing players to engage in gambling activities will not be affected. Games classified prior to September 22 will not be reclassified unless they are modified or require reclassification, but games released before this date may still be subject to reclassification if they introduce 'gambling-like' downloadable content. Additionally, if existing loot boxes are modified or new ones are added to already released games, these changes will also require reclassification under the new rules.
