Intel Allegedly Misses Out on PlayStation 6 Chip Deal to AMD
According to reports, Intel lost the opportunity to supply chips for Sony's upcoming PlayStation 6 console to AMD in 2022, potentially forfeiting around $30 billion in revenue. Reuters cites sources stating that the deal fell through due to disagreements between Intel and Sony over the revenue sharing model for each chip sold. Internal Intel projections reportedly suggested that securing the contract could have injected around $30 billion into the company. This development could have also provided a significant financial boost to Intel's foundry business, which was officially launched earlier this year. In response to these claims, an Intel spokesperson stated that the company disagrees with the characterization of the situation but will not comment on any ongoing or potential customer discussions, highlighting instead its strong customer pipeline and focus on innovation. AMD has been working with Sony since 2014, designing custom chips for the PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 consoles.
