Suda51 Criticizes Overemphasis on Metacritic Scores
Veteran game developer Goichi 'Suda51' Suda expressed his opinion that the gaming industry prioritizes Metacritic scores too heavily. In a conversation with GamesIndustry.biz, Suda and fellow industry legend Shinji Mikami discussed the scarcity of unique games, attributing it to the emphasis on review scores. Suda stated, 'The industry's obsession with Metacritic scores has led to a formulaic approach to game development, where games that don't fit the mold are penalized.' He emphasized that his focus is on creating games that his team is passionate about, rather than chasing high review scores. Mikami added that the marketing power of big-budget games overshadows more unconventional titles, making it difficult for them to gain attention. He noted, 'Games that are more unique often lack the broad market appeal required to secure significant marketing support.'
