Coalition Aims to Boost Latino Presence in the Gaming Industry

The Latino Representation in Gaming Coalition (LRGC) has been established through a partnership of several US Latino-serving organizations. The coalition highlights that 72% of US Hispanics aged 13 and above identify as gamers, with Latinos being 32% more likely to consider gaming their primary source of entertainment. Consequently, the industry is urged to acknowledge and respect the influence of the Latino community. The coalition, which includes organizations such as the National Hispanic Media Coalition, Hispanic Heritage Foundation, and Congressional Hispanic Caucus Institute, aims to promote transparency, greater representation of Latinos in the gaming industry, and more inclusive content. The group also seeks to support the development of Latino creators and foster an environment that welcomes Latinos interested in the industry. According to Congressman Joaquin Castro, 'Video games have become as influential as the media I grew up with.' Castro has worked to improve Latino representation in various sectors of the American entertainment industry, including television and publishing, and believes that Latino gamers, who are a dominant force in the video game market, deserve to see their stories and voices fully represented. Brenda Victoria Castillo, president and CEO of the National Hispanic Media Coalition, emphasizes the personal significance of this coalition, stating that 'with Latine individuals playing video games more than any other group, it has never been more important to have the games we play reflect the positive stories and portrayals our communities want to tell.'
