The Borderlands film garnered a total of $31 million in box office revenue before its cinematic run concluded on September 5. According to data from the film industry tracking site, The Numbers, the movie earned $15.4 million in the United States and nearly $15.5 million internationally after a month-long theatrical release. During its opening weekend, which commenced on August 6, the film accumulated $16 million in global box office sales. The production budget for the movie was reportedly $155 million, with an additional $30 million allocated for marketing and distribution expenses. Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick had previously stated that the film's performance would not have a significant financial impact on the publisher or the overall Borderlands franchise. The film also received largely negative reviews from critics, with a 10% 'rotten' rating on Rotten Tomatoes and a 26% score on Metacritic at the time of writing.
