Raccoon Logic Advocates for Player Ownership: 'Let People Keep the Game They Paid For'
Developer Raccoon Logic is pushing for a shift away from microtransactions and towards a more traditional pay-once model, where players can purchase a game without being nickel-and-dimed for additional content. In an interview, co-founder Alex Hutchinson discussed the importance of player ownership, stating that microtransactions are 'not a healthy way' to keep games alive. He emphasized the need for authenticity in game sales, rather than relying on recurrent consumer spending. The studio's upcoming game, Revenge of the Savage Planet, will reportedly feature no microtransactions, DRM, AI content, or metaverse integration. Hutchinson and fellow co-founder Reid Schneider believe that this approach can lead to a more sustainable and player-friendly gaming industry, citing Nintendo as a successful example of a company that sells games without relying on discounts or gimmicks. The pair also noted a recent trend of games switching from free-to-play to premium models, citing examples such as ARC Raiders and Relic Hunters Legend. By adopting a more traditional model, Raccoon Logic hopes to create a better experience for players and promote a more diverse and thriving gaming ecosystem.
