Sony Announces Price Hike for PS5 Consoles and Accessories in Japan

Sony has announced a price increase for the PlayStation 5 console and its accessories in Japan, citing the current state of the global economy. The changes will take effect on September 2, as outlined on the PlayStation blog. The standard PS5 console will now be priced at ¥79,980, representing a $90 increase from the previous price of ¥66,980. The digital edition will also see a $90 price hike, from ¥59,980 to ¥79,980. Additionally, the prices of accessories such as the DualSense controller will rise to between ¥11,480 and ¥11,980, up from the current range of ¥9,480 to ¥9,980. The PlayStation Portal will increase in price from ¥29,980 to ¥34,980, while the PlayStation VR2 headset will see a $105 price increase, from ¥74,980 to ¥89,980. This move follows a previous price increase in Japan last August, also due to global economic conditions. In its latest financial report, Sony noted a 21% decline in hardware sales to ¥146 billion, with PS5 sales reaching 2.4 million units, down from 3.3 million the previous year.
