US Video Game Spending Sees 10% Increase, Despite Expected Challenges

According to Circana's latest report, the US video game market has experienced a 10% surge in spending compared to the same period in 2023, with growth observed across all categories, including hardware, content, and accessories. Key findings include: Total video game sales for July 2023 were $4,349m, while July 2024 saw $4,773m, representing a 10% increase. Year-to-date sales from December 30, 2023, to August 3, 2024, were $32,094m, a 2% rise from the previous year. The report highlights EA Sports College Football 25 as the best-selling game of 2024 so far. Despite this growth, Circana's video games industry advisor, Mat Piscatella, notes that the year will remain challenging for manufacturers and publishers due to an expected low single-digit decline in overall spending. However, the launch of Nintendo's next-generation hardware and Grand Theft Auto 6 is expected to provide a significant boost. The Future of Video Games Report suggests that 2025 will see a significant rebound, driven by major game releases and the continued trend towards digital delivery. While 'forever' games like Fortnite and Roblox will continue to dominate player time, the report notes that video game hardware revenue is expected to decline in 2024 due to decreases in average prices and units sold. The rise of more accessible platforms like PCs and mobile devices has helped offset some of the console-related declines, with Valve's Steam Deck cited as an emerging area in video game hardware. Piscatella remains optimistic about the long-term outlook, with 2025 expected to bring significant growth potential.
