Tencent Receives Gamescom's 2024 Sustainability Honor
Tencent has been named the winner of Gamescom's 2024 sustainability award. Brent Irvin, President of Tencent Americas, accepted the award on behalf of the company at Gamescom's Opening Night Live, presented by Playing for the Planet. The award acknowledges organizations that publicly demonstrate their commitment to sustainable values and share their methods for tracking and reducing carbon emissions. The judging panel at Playing for the Planet praised Tencent for its transparent approach to setting ambitious sustainability goals and providing regular updates on its progress, covering not only the company's carbon footprint but also its impact on biodiversity. "We are deeply honored to receive this award at Tencent Games," said Irvin. "Our organization encompasses a wide range of activities, from studios in China, Europe, and beyond to our global publishing business, but we all share a commitment to operating in an environmentally responsible manner. "We are dedicated to achieving carbon neutrality in our operations and supply chain by 2030 and would like to thank our studios, partners, and gaming community for their support, which is crucial to our goal of driving positive change in the gaming industry." Sam Barratt, co-founder of Playing for the Planet, added: "As the world faces rising temperatures, floods, and wildfires, with new climate records being set daily, it may seem like a daunting task. However, there is still time to mitigate the worst effects of climate change. "Tencent Games' efforts to reduce their carbon emissions and engage their players are worthy of recognition at Gamescom, and we look forward to collaborating more closely with them and other studios to further amplify their impact."
