Epic Games' Strategy of Giving Away Free Games Has Yielded Exceptional Results
According to Epic Games' CEO, Tim Sweeney, the company's approach to giving away free games has been remarkably successful in terms of user acquisition. On the other hand, Sweeney admitted that several of the company's exclusive deals have not been sound investments. In a recent press conference, Sweeney openly discussed the Epic Games Store's methods for attracting new users. He noted that while some exclusive titles have performed exceptionally well, many others have not provided a satisfactory return on investment. In contrast, Sweeney described the free games initiative as 'nothing short of magical' and 'highly cost-effective.' Although giving away games for free may seem like an unconventional strategy at first glance, it has proven to be an efficient means of drawing in new users. As Sweeney pointed out, 'the concept of giving away free games may seem counterintuitive, but companies typically spend a substantial amount of money to acquire users for their games.' He further explained that by paying game developers to distribute their titles to Epic Games Store users, the company can attract new users at a fraction of the cost of traditional advertising methods like Facebook or Google ads. Sweeney also highlighted that developers who participate in the free games program often experience a significant increase in sales of their paid titles, as the free game helps raise awareness about their work. Moreover, Sweeney noted that some developers now approach Epic Games to collaborate on timed releases of free games, aiming to boost user awareness of their upcoming titles. This approach has proven to be the most cost-effective aspect of the Epic Games Store. The Epic Games Store recently expanded to mobile devices, launching on Android worldwide and on iOS in the European Union, following the Digital Markets Act's requirement for Apple to allow third-party stores on its mobile ecosystem.
