Baldur's Gate 3 Receives Prestigious Hugo Award
Baldur's Gate 3 has been honored with the award for Best Game or Interactive Work at the esteemed Hugo Awards. This achievement marks the game as the second video game to receive this recognition, following in the footsteps of Hades, which was the first recipient when the category was introduced in 2021. The World Science Fiction Convention, the presenter of the awards, decided to make this category permanent last year, as reported by PC Gamer. Baldur's Gate 3 competed against a strong lineup of nominees, including Alan Wake 2, Dredge, Chants of Sennaar, The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, and Star Wars Jedi: Survivor. The winners were announced on Sunday, August 11, at Worldcon in Glasgow. During his acceptance speech, Larian Studios founder Swen Vincke expressed his gratitude for the creation of this award and category, emphasizing the often underappreciated yet demanding nature of video game writing. Vincke highlighted the immense effort that went into creating Baldur's Gate 3, including the development of over 174 hours of cinematics to reflect player choices and ensure a deeply personal and emotional story for each player. He continued, praising the perseverance, talent, and dedication of his team, and expressed his appreciation for the recognition from the fandom.
