Sega's $102.5 Million in Full Game Sales Mitigates Overall Revenue Decline
Sega has announced its financial results for the quarter ending June 30, 2024, revealing a decline in overall net sales, but a strong performance from its video game segment. The company generated ¥15.1 billion ($102.5 million) in revenue from full game sales, representing a nearly 40% increase compared to the same period last year. The Entertainment Contents division, which includes video games, toys, and animation, saw a 34% rise in sales to ¥72.7 billion ($493.3 million). Despite this, Sega Sammy's overall net sales and profits decreased year-over-year, largely due to the comparison with the launch of Smart Pachislot Hokuto No Ken during the same period last year. The pachislot and pachinko division experienced a 43% year-over-year decline in net sales to ¥28.8 billion ($195.8 million). However, the Entertainment Contents segment saw both sales and profit increase year-over-year, with Sega Sammy attributing this to strong DLC sales, favorable foreign exchange rates, and the inclusion of Rovio. While full game sales were up year-over-year, they were slightly below expectations, with 5.9 million games sold. New releases accounted for 710,000 units, and Shin Megami Tensei V Vengeance was a key seller, with 500,000 units sold. Back catalogue games generated ¥11.2 billion ($76 million) in revenue, while new game sales brought in ¥3.9 billion ($26.5 million). Sega also reported positive performances from Unicorn Overlord and the Persona 5 Royal remaster. The increase in video game profits was partly due to the acquisition of Rovio, which was completed in August 2023. Additionally, Sega reported strong revenues related to the Sonic The Hedgehog movies. The company expects a solid performance from Entertainment Contents for the remainder of the fiscal year, driven by upcoming releases such as Sonic X Shadow Generations, Sonic Rumble, and the new Atlus IP Metaphor: ReFantazio, as well as the third Sonic The Hedgehog movie. Sega also provided an update on its medium-term management plan, which includes the creation of a new Gaming Business to handle casino and igaming products. As part of this plan, Sega Sammy has acquired US firm GAN Limited and announced the acquisition of Netherlands-based Stakelogic, which develops B2B iGaming content.
