GameStop Ceases Operations of Game Informer

After 33 years of publication, Game Informer has ceased operations. According to a report by Kotaku, a meeting was held on Friday, August 2, where staff members were informed of the closure by GameStop, the parent company, and told that the entire team would be laid off with severance packages provided. On the same day, GameStop released a statement on social media announcing the shutdown of the site. Former video lead Alex Van Aken noted that the Game Informer website was completely taken down, leaving employees without the chance to retrieve their work, and now only displays a landing page with the statement shared on social media. Kyle Hilliard, the former content director of Game Informer, mentioned that the team had completed about 70% of the next issue before the magazine was shut down and all staff were let go. GameStop initially acquired Game Informer in 2000 and had previously shut down Game Informer Australia in 2019, followed by two rounds of layoffs in August and March of the same year.
