Bungie Announces Significant Layoffs Amid Restructuring Efforts
In a major restructuring move, Bungie has announced that it will be laying off 220 staff members, which accounts for 17% of its total workforce. According to Bungie's CEO, Pete Parsons, the decision to downsize is necessary to make significant adjustments to the company's cost structure and to focus its development efforts on the Destiny and Marathon franchises. The layoffs will affect various levels of the organization, including executive and senior leadership roles. Parsons expressed his gratitude to the departing colleagues, acknowledging their valuable contributions to the company. To support those affected, Bungie will be offering a comprehensive exit package, including severance pay, bonuses, and health coverage. In addition to the layoffs, 155 employees will be joining Sony Interactive Entertainment, while another 75 will be working on a new science-fantasy action game project under the PlayStation Studios umbrella. This move is part of Bungie's efforts to deepen its integration with Sony. The company's headcount has decreased from 1300 to approximately 850, following the reduction of 100 employees last November. Parsons reflected on the circumstances that led to this decision, citing the company's overly ambitious goals, rapid expansion, and the subsequent economic downturn. Despite efforts to mitigate the financial challenges, the company was forced to change course and implement cost-cutting measures. Parsons acknowledged that this will be a difficult time for the team and emphasized the importance of supporting affected employees during this transition period.
