East Asia Games Market Reaches $30.1 Billion in 2023

According to a report by Niko Partners, the East Asian gaming market yielded $30.1 billion in revenue for 2023 and is projected to experience a 2.9% decline in 2024, resulting in $29.2 billion. The report, which focuses on Japan and Korea, indicates a modest increase in the number of gamers, reaching 96.3 million in 2023. Mobile gaming dominated the market, accounting for 68.4% of total revenue. Additionally, Niko Partners' East Asia Gamers Behaviour and Market Insights report for July 2024 found that 97 million gamers in Japan and Korea engage with multiple platforms. Notably, over 70% of Japanese mobile gamers and 90% of South Korean PC gamers participate in cross-platform gaming. Furthermore, 39% of Japanese players and 58% of Korean players utilize at least two platforms. The research also discovered that more than 31% of Japanese gamers and 40% of Korean gamers watch live game streams, with YouTube being the preferred platform, followed by local platforms such as SOOP and NicoNico. Niko Partners CEO Lisa Hanson observed, 'There has been a significant rise in gamers using multiple platforms over the past year, partly due to the increased availability of consoles in Japan following the pandemic and the development of more multi-platform games that drive engagement across consoles, mobile devices, and PCs. The most notable aspect is that East Asian gamers demonstrate higher engagement with cross-platform games.'
