Xbox One Update Issues Spark Concerns Over Console Hardware's Future
Certain original Xbox One consoles, specifically those with pre-2018 firmware, are experiencing difficulties when attempting to download the latest updates. As a result, these systems, which date back to 2013, are becoming unusable. Digital Foundry, a sister site of Eurogamer, conducted tests on three separate Xbox One consoles and found that all of them failed to update, with systems operating on older firmware revisions encountering errors when connected to Xbox Live. Despite having been updated since their launch in 2013, with one running a 2018 dashboard and two others running a 2017 dashboard, none of the consoles were able to download the latest firmware, whether online or via an offline USB. This issue is also affecting players who have purchased sealed, 'as new' systems, rendering them unable to access Xbox Live, make digital purchases, or play games that require an online check. Digital Foundry's polling suggests that only systems with firmware from 2018 or later are affected, while the newer Xbox One S hardware from 2016 remains unaffected. The technology editor, Richard Leadbetter, stated, 'We've informed Microsoft and are confident the problem will be fixed, but the situation raises concerns about the future prospects of console hardware that relies on an internet connection to function fully.' This issue highlights the importance of games and hardware preservation, as well as ownership rights, and serves as a warning about the potential risks of consoles that require online connections. Leadbetter added, 'The idea that a working console can stop working is a red flag, and it's a reminder that while you may have bought a piece of hardware, you can only use it as long as the platform holder continues to support it.' This raises questions about the long-term operability of consoles, with Leadbetter wondering, 'If it's happening now, what about 10 or 20 years into the future?' He noted that older consoles, such as the Atari VCS, can still be used after decades, but the same may not be true for modern consoles that rely on online connections.
