Skills-Based Matchmaking Crucial for Call of Duty Player Engagement

New research from Activision reveals that over 90% of Call of Duty players exhibit decreased playtime when skills-based matchmaking is not prioritized. A recent study examined the impact of skills-based matchmaking on player behavior, finding that this approach, which matches players based on their skill levels, is vital for maintaining player engagement. In a test conducted in early 2024 within Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3, half of the players experienced reduced skills-based matchmaking. The results showed a 90% drop in returning player rates and an 80% increase in match quit rates. Notably, only the top 10% of skilled players continued to play, resulting in an uneven player pool and decreased overall experience. According to Activision, skills-based matchmaking leads to better end-of-match placements, increased player retention, and reduced quit rates for 80-90% of players, underscoring its importance for a positive gaming experience.
